After switching topics multiple times and worrying myself into a frenzy for the past five days, I have finally settled on a topic for my column. Now I must choose whether I use this one for this Thursday or next Thursday. I have to turn in two this week because I am going to New York Thursday and will not have time to write a column while on vacation. However, it would be kind of cool to write a column from New York and e-mail it in. I would be like Carrie from Sex and the City.
I’ve decided I’m at a peculiar age in my life. While things used to be so clear and set in stone, there was no gray area, now things sometimes contradict what I used to think and ideals run together every so often.
Youthful minds usually lean towards the liberal left with comments like, “If it’s too loud, you’re too old,” and “Just one puff won’t hurt.” This is what I used to be like, but now I complain about the youth of America being too broadminded and not respecting their elders, which I sadly am one of now.
A perfect example of where I am torn in life’s tough issues is cable television. I am a huge fan of The Shield, the gritty, genuine cop show on FX starring Michael Chiklis. Some older viewers may know Chiklis better as The Commish. The Shield sometimes shows images and situations that even I, a 24-year-old male, am uncomfortable to watch.
When a compromising situation with a gang-banger and another male are shown or a half-naked woman posing the outline of her breast is displayed, I think to myself, “Can this be shown on television?”
Cable has become what NBC, ABC and CBS were 10 years ago, normal television. If someone says cable television today, most people probably think of HBO, Cinemax and Showtime.
What is appropriate now for cable television? To answer this question, I become two different people. The conservative Matthew Brandon Cook, reporter for the Ennis Daily News, says children and young adults should not be subjected to such filth and violence. Then the abrasive, liberal Matt Cook, community extremist, responds with facts like it is cable television, it is shown at 9 p.m. and if they want to see violence they can watch the nightly news or get on the Internet and download videos of people doing insanely stupid acts of violence.
So which viewpoint is right? Should cable television be regulated like network television has been or should parents discipline their kids enough to not watch smut like The Shield or South Park?
I would like to say the answer is simple, but it’s not. We cannot shield people from what is going on in this world by channel blocking, but we also shouldn’t allow kids to do whatever they want or watch whatever they want.
Shows like The Shield are for entertainment value only. They are not trying to get the general public to do anything more than watch the show and produce ratings.
Cable was introduced so television could be edgy and new. It is a place for shows like The Shield to be run. It doesn’t show nudity, sometimes the occasional butt shot or silhouette of a female body part can be seen, but NYPD Blue has shown Dennis Franz’s rear before and that show is on network television.
My final resting place on this issue will be open-mindedness. Let the television series remain edgy and promiscuous. It is what FX is known for with series such as The Shield and Nip/Tuck.

Just Under Four Hours
I had an idea but have since scrapped it and am back at square one. What is square one anyway? And can it become a column subject? Get back on track Matt. Focus. Usually in college when I had writer's block I would go run and that would get the cogs spinning, but it's too hot to run today. I will have to figure it out soon. The clock is ticking.
Less Than Eight Hours To Go
It's 9:30 and I still don't have a column topic. It's going to come down to the wire. I'll either have to settle on a nice "welcome to the neighborhood" piece or lift an old blog entry and revamp it. However, some brilliant idea could come to mind in the next few hours.

My Column Isn't Coming Along
I haven't decided the approach to take with my column yet. Part of me wants to be serious and begin my first column on a "welcome to my style of writing" kind of piece, but then the other half wants to write about some prick posting anonymously to Micah about the coverage of the 5K and 10K runs at the Polka Festival. I will probably end of writing about my introduction into Ennis and how nice the community has been. That would probably be smart to make everyone happy before I start bashing stereotypes and other groups.

Will This Be On The Midterm?
Back to school, back to school,
To show my daddy I'm not a fool.
I've got my lunch sack packed, my shoes tied tight.
Hope I don't get in a fight.
Oooh, back to school, back to school.
Well, I guess I can't let Chad and James show me up in longevity of scholastic careers. Sandy is putting me back into college. Do you think this has anything to do with the kind of work I've been doing lately?
I have been enrolled in a 10 week Internet course for new journalists. It will teach me different aspects of the job and how to do certain tasks. I just hope dead week is better than SFA's.

Sopranos: Season Five
I was one of the unlucky few who missed last season of The Sopranos and The Shield. I have had to wait diligently for both shows to come out on DVD so I could catch up.
When The Shield hit the shelves I was their within hours to buy my copy. I watched the entire season in a matter of a few days. It was great. Chad and I are now struggling through the new season. It is a great show still, but I don't have cable and he tivos the show. Then he has to wait for me to come in town and watch an episode or two. If I would just get cable then we could watch the show individually and then talk about it later.
With The Sopranos I owned my copy even faster than The Shield. I will get through it faster also. I bought it at midnight on Monday evening and after tonight I will be caught up with the Soprano crime family. I will be able to listen to the Ticket when they discuss anything related to the show. I will be able to stop telling people to shut up about the next season because I don't know what happened last season. When this happens I look like Jimmy Fallon in Fever Pitch when they are at the seafood place and he hears someone talking about the Red Sox game, except I'm not holding a crab leg.
I am trying to get through everything at work so I can go home and watch the show, but I have a "man on the street" story due and I'm having trouble finding volunteers for the column. Oh well, time to go hit the pavement for some recruits.

It's Heeeeeeeeeeeere
Training is over and now is when I begin performing my job alone. I will still get tons of help from Sandy and go to meetings around town with Micah, however I have had four realizations today that show I am settling into my job.
The first was I walked into the front office this morning and thought I was in the wrong building. The front area was completely remodeled over the weekend and it looks very different. It's newer and sleeker. What made me realize I am settling into my job is that if the job still was new and I felt I didn't belong, the front office would probably not have stood out to me. I would have likely just walked through and not given it any notice at all. Yet I did notice. This makes me think I belong here now and I am one of the guys at the office.
Secondly, I have had three new job assignments given to me today that will be a routine thing. The first involved a meeting with Chief Dale Holt of the Ennis Police Department. Sandy took me over to EPD and we took a tour with Lt. Ron Roark. He showed me the detectives' offices, the jail cells in the basement and where I would be picking up the reports from the previous night. I was then informed by Holt of the peace officer/news reporter confidentiality clause that is basically an understanding that I will not report anything that is off the record or libelous to the police department without first conversing with him. I will be reporting to Lt. Roark every morning at 9 a.m. to discuss any questions I have about a case in progress.
My second assignment given to me today was a "Man on the Street" story, which are questions I have to ask random people about around town. Today's question was about Michael Jackson. It took me a while to find some volunteers for such a volatile subject. I was also given questions for the next several days, but I will complete those on a day-to-day basis.
The final assignment discussed during my meeting with Sandy this morning was my column. I will have a featured column every Wednesday starting next week. This is kind of scary. I blog a column all the time, but it is only read by my friends and the occasional passer-by. You can tell when I am being sarcastic. I am afraid I will be too abrasive for Ennis. Also, what if I don't have anything to talk about. Luckily, for a little while I can pull old blog entries and use those. That will work for a while.
The third item of recognizing my settlement in the office was I now listen to the scanner when it goes off. Before today I would sometimes block the noise out and not pay attention. Today I picked up on a report of a female being tackled and thrown into a truck as it pulled away. Nothing came of the report, because I'm not an ambulance chaser, but it was a good sign that I heard the scanner when it went off.
The final realization was my computer and desk are starting to look like me. I replaced the old mouse pad today with a special one I got for Christmas from my mom. The old one was a plain, maroon-colored pad with no personality. Now it is a picture of the Rat Pack around a pool table. My desktop also has a picture that is very me. It is a poster of the 1933 production of King Kong. I like it and it is much better than the plain blue background I did have. Now I stare into Kong's eyes as he is battling planes atop the Empire State Building, which I will be at in just over a week's time.
All of these things combines made me see how much I am starting to feel at home in the office. However, I should always feel at home at the office, because it is in the same building as my home.

WSOP Update
Daniel Negreanu didn't fare too well in the third event of the WSOP. He was knocked out on about the fifth hand. Good hands, no help. However, just to show how well the guy is doing, he has paid for every entry from now until the end. That is impressive. He did not to show off but to not stand in long lines. I wish I had that option. Oh well.

I'm Completely Whole Again...And I Have Some Recommendations
After Chad screwed up my blog and weeks of restoring it, I have put it completely back together. I've added a few links I didn't have before and I changed my template. All entries are to their full content and grammatical best (if a mistake has been made, then I just missed it).
During this restoration process, I came across some very funny entries that I will now share with everyone. If you want a good read or chuckle go to the following:
Anything involving the trips to Las Vegas in June and July from 2004.
The entries about my trip to Europe in December.
Could SpongeBob Be Gay? from January 24.
My Second Rant on May 31, 2004.
Polka Festival Begins from May 27, 2005.
Principles and Principals on May 24, 2004.

WSOP 2005 Begins
Today begins an annual event that my friends and I have paid close attention to for two years now. Today begins the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
The World Series officially started in 1970 with seven players. However, the first battle between the best was played more than two decades before that. In the summer of 1949, Nicolas "Nick the Greek" Dandolos asked Benny Binion, owner of the Horseshoe Casino, to find the best player in poker and set up a high-stakes game between the two. Binion did just that. He organized a match between Dandolos and Johnny Moss. After five months of playing a number of poker games and only breaking for sleep, Moss finally defeated Dandolos and took away $2 million. This is also where we get the famous line from Dandolos, "Mr. Moss, I have to let you go." He then proceeded to go upstairs for some much needed rest.
In 1970, the game was played with a democratic twist. A vote was taken and the majority elected Johnny Moss winner. The next year it was set up the way we know today. A freezeout tournament was played and Johnny Moss won that also. After Thomas "Amarillo Slim" Preston won it the following year, he appeared on the talk-show circuit and the WSOP gained some momentum.
Last year saw 2,576 entries and this year the event is being moved to the Rio to hold the estimated high number of players (some have projected the count will be over 5,000). Today at 2 p.m., noon Las Vegas time, begins the WOSP with a small no-limit tournament, $500 entry fee, between casino employees. The main event that most casual poker players only know about begins July 7, but I will have the privilege to see how the pro poker players fare in the lesser known, which means cheaper and more likely to have amatuers, tournaments.

I Am Now Whole...Almost
If you haven't noticed the archive dates to the right of the screen, you will not have figured out that I have finally put all of my posts back on my blog. I am missing a few comments for the first three posts, but I will have to add those tomorrow because the comments field has been disabled due to so much activity in twenty minutes. This is also why you may not be able to post any comments right now to this entry.
Tomorrow I will be complete and this prank gone awry (or maybe the pranker got exactly what he wanted out of this) will be a distant memory. As of tomorrow, everything will be back to normal on mobyd.blogspot.com.

This Just In
A man from Ennis has come up with the perfect clothing idea. I will be wearing this new addition to fashion to church this coming Sunday. It is an attachable pocket for your shirt. WOW! What an idea.
This guy probably came up with the answer to the age-old question, "What do you do when you go to a business party and you're wearing a shirt that doesn't have a pocket on it, while everyone else, including your boss who is thinking of filling Johnson's administrative position, has a shirt with pockets?" Add your own pocket. Genius.

Congratulations James, You Beat Out The Competition
Clint and James have both had their hopes set on being in the Ennis Daily News and after just a few weeks James won the race by doing something newsworthy...he came to the Polka Festival.
My job Saturday was to go to the three dance halls in Ennis and take photos of the people enjoying the music and food. I was also supposed to take pictures of dancers, but that was like finding a neo-nazi at a NAACP rally. Hard. For a bunch of PoLKofA (Polka Lover's Klub of America) members being in one room, they don't really do much polka dancing.
James decided to help me out by finding two girls dressed in Czech garb and he proceeded to ask them for a photo. He lied to them a bit by saying he was with the Daily News, but he and I believe in the motto "whatever it takes to get the job done."
James is sporting his new Polka Festival shirt and has a proud smile on his face. However, the smile is not because he is standing between two teenage Czech girls. It's because he came up with an idea that got him in the newspaper.
Sorry Clint, but James beat you on this one.

39th Annual Polka Festival Begins
Tell me who is more pathetic in the following situation:
Player A: Enters a polka dance contest.
Player B: Travels out of their way to watch a polka dance contest.
Player C: Journalist happily humming to music during polka dance contest.
I will tell you. It is Player C. I am the most pathetic. To start things off this year during the polka festival, Sokol Hall held the 19th Annual King and Queen Polka Dance Contest tonight. Let's give it up for Jack Rabbit Slim's Dance Contest. Anyone...anyone...no, okay.
Sandy, my editor, put Micah on high school graduation commencement while I was stuck with polkaus dorkius (that's Latin for polka dork). I thought I was getting the better gig. Little did I know.
The night started off bad. I didn't take my official Ennis Daily News press pass inside with me because Micah has now made me feel self-conscious about the thing. But of course, because I wasn't wearing it, a big stink was made with the officials. I went back outside and got the darn thing and wore it proudly all night long, especially when I met up with the reporter from our rival newspaper, the Ennis Journal, but we will get to that in a minute.
Next, as I was waiting for the contest to start, a little girl of about six or seven started talking to me. She showed me a quarter and asked if I could spin it. Because of the loud accordion coming from the 38 speakers next to me, I heard would I spend it. So I grabbed the coin and what happened next? Little Susie Q flips out. Okay, okay. Take your quarter back. Good gosh. She then shows me how to SPIN the quarter. Nice trick kid, but can you stop it with your thumbs and shoot it into the basket I have created with my thumbs. Oh, you can't. Then take a shot.
Just kidding people. She then played the lovable game of I will roll the quarter and you try to not let it pass you. This was fun for about half a roll. I thought about letting the darn thing pass me every time just to get amusement out of watching her crawl underneath tables and people to get a lousy 25 cents.
Finally the contest started. It was fine on the whole. Nothing of interest happened. I did hum with the music. I am lame.
Afterward, as I was taking pictures of the winners, I saw a girl in full 1874 Czech gear holding a notepad. Who was this? It was the competition. She was the Ennis Journal reporter, who came from L.A., and that's not the abbreviation for Louisiana. She came all the way from California to be a reporter in Ennis. What was she thinking. (By the way, Micah that is not a slam at you. I have heard the reason you are in Ennis, so much love.) My rival for information was actually kind of nice. I let her ask all the questions to the winners while I just wrote down answers. It was a nice gig. Unprofessional, maybe. Easier, definitely.
I finally thanked everyone who had given me info, congratulated the winners and booked it out of Sokol Hall. My introduction to the Polka festival has been not great, but maybe tomorrow will hold a better day.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It
That title is for you Clint.
For those who care, I may be on t.v. tomorrow morning. Channel 11 News (CBS) will possibly be airing a clip on the Polka Festival and I will be in a background shot doing the chicken dance. Check it out and let me know if it airs, because we all know I'm not getting up any earlier than I have to unless I know it is a sure thing. I'll be right behind the chicken in a white and blue plaid shirt.

Retirement Came A Bit Early
This will be short because there is more important stuff going on right now. After last night at WinStar, I am deciding to retire. Actually, I am going to take a little hiatus from poker. If the TOC starts then that might bring me out of retirement early, but I plan on it lasting about two months. Maybe I will come back when I am 25 (that would be August 9 for those who don't know when my birthday is). However, from what I have just found out I might not be invited to the next TOC. People don't like playing with me according to some sources. I hope my game improves during this time away. Until later.

Clint, This Blog Is For You
There are 22, count them 22, gas stations in Ennis. I was asked to find 17 of them and put their prices on Sandy's desk tonight. It took me about 20 minutes to find them all and write them down. However, there are over 20 gas stations in the little town of Ennis. Suck on that Clint.

I'm One Year Old Today
It's been a long journey and lots of crazy things have happened in that year, but I've made it. I have been blogging for one full year as of today. I have been on several road trips to Shreveport, Las Vegas and recently Oklahoma. I went on a mock trip through Europe. That was really fun. I have had my handprints reinstated at Duff Elementary. I have blogged about interviews and jobs.
Some changes have had to be made to my template due to pranks from friends and mistakes on my part. I have added links to my friends blogs. Clint, I now have you as a link, so don't stop posting.
I didn't add the counter until probably six months into the blog's life, but I have had quite a number of people to look at the thing. I hope to keep this going for another strong year and I will post as much as I can.
If anyone wants cake or refreshments, it will be on the kitchen table. That is located above the drain where the blood and fluids would drain during the embalming. Have a good day and see you next year.

Week Not Going Well For New Reporter
It only took 12 working days for me to finally show up late. Today I came rushing into work 15 minutes late. By my watch I was only five minutes late, and considering I woke up seven minutes earlier and looked quite presentable I would say I had done pretty well. Of course, it is the business clock that matters, so I was 15 minutes late. I will have to set my home clocks to my work clock.
Yesterday I discovered by creating folders on the server I had locked up the computers and screwed up some stories. Now I'm showing up late. My Battle of the Bands story sucked about as bad as Sidekick Jane's performance Friday night. This week is not going too well for me.

My Second Week As A Reporter
I am still a reporter. Not fired yet. Isn't that great? I have been learning a lot and am now a published reporter.
Thursday morning I came into the office and found a picture frame leaning against my computer screen. I walked around to see what it was and to my surprise I saw the front page of that morning's edition framed with some balloon strings attached to the upper corner. How thoughtful are my coworkers? Sandy told me congratulations on having my first cover story published. It was very sweet. The poster is now hanging in my bedroom. I love it.
The front page contained two stories I had written. One was about the Chitale case in Waxahachie and the other was a food drive conducted through the Ennis Post Office. Neither of the pictures used are mine, but the writing is (minus some editorial work from Sandy).
My interview with the newly elected mayor of Alma ran in Friday's edition. It also made the front page, however I have quickly figured out that almost anything written by Micah, Sandy or myself will make the front page unless it is a feature column.
Some pictures I took last week of a student/teacher basketball game and an elementary musical were supposed to run in tomorrow's edition, but the files were locked up, because of a mistake on my part. Instead, the sports story will be run without pictures now.
I should also have my Battle of the Bands fiasco run tomorrow. We will see.
I love my job still. It is exciting and new. I can't wait to learn some more lessons and write more articles about all things Ennis.

Good Night Ennis!
Last night I was assigned the gig of covering the Ennis High School freshman class fundraiser Battle of the Bands. The show itself had its laughs, but I will not take away from James' story. If you would like to know what happened and who should have won, go to his link on the right.
This site will be for what I learned at Battle of the Bands. First lesson, my press pass will get me anywhere I want to be. Forget American Express, I have Ennis Daily News. All I have to do is where the plastic card around my neck and throw out the words "Daily News" and I am allowed full access. I wanted a picture from the stage during a performance, I got it. I wanted an interview with the band, I got it. I wanted cops to break up a mosh pit, I got it. Actually the last one wasn't really what I wanted. It just happened that during the set of The Bronco League a group of misguided youth ran to the front of the auditorium and jumped around like fools. Local law enforcement quickly dispersed the fans. My press pass is the greatest thing ever. I'm going to take it everywhere now. Local restaurants, bars, concerts. I'll get anything I want.
Second lesson learned was I need assistants. I did some of my best journalizing last night because James helped ask the questions and Clint wrote down the answers. As a team, we accomplished what some of the best journalists in the world only attempt. I can easily put them on the pay roll if they don't want more than $5 an hour and a free tab at the local Three Dog Tavern.
My final lesson is something I already knew, but I am going to reiterate it for you. I don't really like high school kids. They are annoying, obnoxious and clueless know-it-alls. What made last night so terrible was 80% of the bands were high school kids who tried so hard to be different. Yet in trying to be different they ended up all being the same. You want to know how to be different in high school. Be a dork. That's the answer. Geeks and dweebs are outcasts in high school because they are different. Tip of the day students: If you want to be different, be a dork.
Last night was a lot of fun and three out of five bands were actually decent. The first two sucked though. The first were laughable bad and the second were bad in the "I want to bang my head against a wall instead of listen to this filth" way. If you would like to know more about the bands, check out James' blog. He will have his story behind the night, a critique of the bands and a Q&A with the winners.

My First Big Case Ended In A Plea Bargain
I have been with the Ennis Daily News for only eight days now, yet I have already attended my first criminal trial. Too bad the defendant, Dr. Ani Chitale (not a doctor any longer), pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault and two misdemeanors of sexual misconduct and public lewdness.
He was given 180 days in county jail, minus one credited day, the maximum fines of $10,000, $4,000, $2,000 and court costs, 10 years deferred adjudication community probation and had his medical license taken away. Chitale will also be listed as a sexual offender for the rest of his life, so Clint can look the guy up on the website he checks out for personal reasons.
I got the first big case out of the way. I should be golden for the rest of them. The story was written up by yours truly, but if Sandy doesn't use it I wouldn't blame her. I practically copied the entire press release and old stories for the new one. It had a quote from the victim, but other than that I wouldn't expect anything better than what a high school student could type up the night before his senior thesis is due over Animal Farm. For you seniors out there who were just reminded about that thesis, www.online-literature.com works well.

More Painful Lessons
What I learned from WinStar Casino is this. A hand like 2-3 is playable only when it is suited. People will sit for blackjack even when they have to pay for the seat. WinStar Casino allows players to drop the "f" bomb at the table.
Lesson one leads into lesson three. While playing $10-20 Hold'em, I had pocket Kings and was in late position. What this means is no one is going to fold that hasn't already called. I just called to see a flop. The flop was low card, low card, low card. I bet. A few called. The turn was a low card. I bet, got raised and called. The river was a low card. I checked. Guy bet. I called. He showed 2-3 suited. I notice a two and a three on the flop. Without a moments hesitation I spew the line, "Wow, that is a f___ing terrible hand."
This doesn't phase the young pup. I call him young because he had to be no older than 18 (WinStar allows 18 and older in their casino). He asks quite calmly and almost apologetically, "What'd you have?" I told him my pair and he answered back, "Oh, that sucks. That's a bad beat man. Usually I don't play that hand...but it was suited."
Ooooooooooh, it was suited. That explains it. Okay, a three high flush will probably be good. Excellent call.
I lost it. I got up, walked over to Chad and James and told them about the bastard who knocked down my pocket pair. Now ladies and gentlemen, I am calm most of the time at a public card table. Sometimes between friends I will threaten to punch someone in the face, but in a casino card room I usually just sit and take the pain of a bad beat. I have flipped someone off before and cussed quite loudly another time, but on the whole I am pretty good. Well, not Saturday night. I didn't care then. This kid pissed me off.
I went back to the table, sat down and decided to win my next good hand. I had $51 left. The hand before I was big blind was perfect for me. I was dealt A-K of clubs. So it is about as useful as A-K offsuit. Statistics show the clubs don't come as often as say spades (this is sarcasm if you're not picking up on it). I raised from under the gun. Got called by one player and the blinds. The flop came A-6-2. Small blind checked. Big blind the same. I bet 10 of my last $30. Guy to my left (we will call him "But They Were Suited") raised. Small blind called. Big blind folded. I re-raise. But They Were Suited called. Small blind called. The turn is a nothing card. Small blind checked. I bet my last dollar for the all in.
This is where it gets mind boggling. Keep in mind this pot is about $170. But They Were Suited thinks about it. I don't mean for a few seconds. He ponders what to do. He finally called. Woah, are you sure you're getting the proper odds for that call? Oh, he must be weighing in the implied odds so if he hits his hand he will get more money out of me. The small blind also thinks about it. What is going on here? This is not a complicated matter. IT'S A DOLLAR. Maybe they wanted a smaller increment bet. Can I convert that into yen? Small blind finally called. What a shock.
The river came with a six. I know this card hurt me. The small blind came out betting. Well, he has a six. I said this out loud. I said it loud enough for But They Were Suited to hear me. He called. Oh, do they both have a six? Who has the higher kicker?
The small blind flips over 10-6 suited. No surprise. But They Were Suited flips over Ace-Five suited. Surprise. Let's break this down. How can the small blind call a raise pre-flop with 10-6 suited and then play it once an ace hits the board and people are betting, raising and re-raising? Fine, whatever. How can But They Were Suited call on the end without a six and only a five kicker with his two pair?
Needless to say, I was out. Before we left I learned one more lesson. Blackjack has a small charge at WinStar. Hey Chihay, what's with the rental fee. James paid fifty cents for every hand played at blackjack. If you want a full lay out of the blackjack experience go to James' site. His link is on the right.
WinStar will be our new casino of choice despite it only opening the card room for 11 hours, being understaffed and lacking in customer service. The plus sides are it is more than half the drive Shreveport is, holds as many tables as the Horseshoe card room and is more than half the drive Shreveport is. Excuse me? Oh yes, the drive is that important to us.
No one came back profitable, but the inaugural trip of Oklahoma gambling was a worthwhile experience. We just wish Clint had joined in on the fun.

I Choose WinStar
I will make this brief since I am at work. James, Chad and I went to WinStar and it didn't pan out too well. I lost some money and hated the people at my table. I will go into more detail later tonight.

Name This Quote
I was watching a movie today and a speech I have heard before delivered by one of the characters made me laugh almost as much as the monologue from National Lampoons Christmas Vaction. Here is the quote:
You want me to teach you something? You want to learn something? All right. Here's a useful lesson for you. Give up. Just quit. Because in this life, you can't win. Yeah, you can try, but in the end you're just gonna lose. Big time. Because the WORLD is run by the man.
Who?
The man. Oh, you don't know the man. Oh, he's everywhere. In the White House. Down the hall. Miss Mullins, she's the man. And the man ruined the ozone, and he's burning down the Amazon, and he kidnapped Shamu and put her in a chlorine tank. Okay, and there used to be a way to stick it to the man. It was called rock and roll. But guess what. Oh no, the man ruined that too with a little thing called MTV!
So don't waste your time by trying to make anything cool or pure or awesome, because the man is just going to call you a fat, washed up loser and crush your soul. So do yourselves a favor and just GIVE UP!

My First Week As A Reporter
Today marks the end of my first week as a journalist for the Ennis Daily News. The week has gone quite fast, however that may be because I come in at 10 in the morning and leave at around 3:30 in the afternoon, but in my defense it is because I have gone to meetings in the evening.
Sandy, my editor, is teaching me a lot. Tuesday and Wednesday I wrote up a mock story for the meetings I had gone to the previous night. Sandy then had me compare the story to what was published in the morning paper by Micah. We have yet to go over those stories, but we plan to next week. Yesterday I went on a scavenger hunt for different locations and offices throughout Ellis County. I now can find the Sewer Treatment Plant in Ennis and the Waxahachie Civic Center. Good for me.
For today, I was assigned a research project. I had to find the answers and documentation for the following:
1. List of all registered sex offenders in Ennis zip codes.
2. How much money did the Texas Department of Transportation (Tx DoT) spend on projects in Ellis County in 2004?
3. List of Ellis County projects currently in progress by Tx Dot.
4. Find and prepare an open records request to the Ellis County Sheriff's office asking for the total number of drug-related arrests in 2004 and 2003.
5. How many veterans are there in Ellis County?
6. What is the total rainfall for Ellis County this year? What was the coldest, hottest, wettest day of this year so far?
I found an answer to all but the veterans question. I believe this office is closed for good because they have been closed the last two days during my scavenger hunt and they haven't returned my phone call yet. That was another cool thing about the research project was that I got to call around and ask people for official documentation to be faxed to Matt Cook, government reporter at the Ennis Daily News. How cool is that? The coolness will fade away according to Micah.
I had the biggest problem trying to locate the weather answers. It cannot be found on the national weather website. I eventually called KERA in DFW and asked them where I could find the answers. After the initial dumbfounding sound in their laughter at my question they eventually transferred me to enough people that I could get a reliable phone number to call. I had to get the info from the Waxahachie Fire Department.
The two biggest things about this week have been my paycheck (for two days baby) and my first published picture. I took a picture during a prayer meeting Wednesday night and it was published on the front page of the Thursday edition. My mom and friends are all so proud of me. If you would like a detailed description of Wednesday nights events, go to James' blog. His link is on the right. I really like my job and can't wait to learn more.

I'm Back, But Not Whole
I have to recreate everything, but I am back in business. My buddies decided to play a joke on me and it went a little to far. My e-mail and blogger accounts were hacked into. I have them back and am working on rebuilding.

A Brief Update
I will make this fast because I have some errands to run and packing of all sorts to do.
Wednesday I went to Ennis to finalize where I would be living and to fill out an application for a P. O. Box. I don't have a mailbox in my apartment, so I will have to go to the post office everyday. Luckily, the post office is around the corner from my apartment. With my mail being around the corner and my office next door, the only time I'll have to leave will be to interview someone or pick up reports from the police stations.
While I was in town I stopped by the Daily News and met everyone. I got the full tour of the place and even opened up an old drawer where they used to keep the bodies. Keep in mind, I am working in the old city morgue. After meeting the staff at the newspaper I am getting even more excited. They were all so nice and I am sure I will get along with everyone.
Thursday I went back down to Ennis to finalize getting my P. O. Box. It had to be done in person and I wanted to set up my mail immediately. I came back to Arlington and turned in a change of address form. I also set up a date for my electricity to be set up. They will arrive on Wednesday. I found out my car will not be ready until Wednesday also, so this poses a problem of going back to Arlington to pick MobyD up. I'll just have to do it early in the morning and get back to Ennis before 10:00.
Today I am packing and finishing up small details like address changes with credit cards and bank accounts. You never want the account in Belize to not know where you are. Isn't that right Chad?
Well, I need to finish some packing before we pick up the U-Haul to move James' stuff tonight and then my stuff tomorrow. Life is so much more interesting when you have stuff to do during the day. I have forgotten how fulfilling it is to accomplish things throughout the day.

Playground Built For A Certain Sex
While on recess duty yesterday I was thinking about something never before touched upon. Are specific items on a child's playground made with a particular sex in mind?
With so many children frolicking back and forth, to and fro, it was mind boggling to see how much energy they can store up during an hour of sitting at tables drawing an ice-cream cone inside a circle. No child can restrain from playing on every piece of equipment during 30 minutes of recess, however I observed certain boys and girls drawn to distinct spots on the playground. Let us begin with the staple of the playground.
Swing Set: The swing set is the first thing that comes to mind when a playground is thought of. It is where Kevin Arnold and Winnie Cooper learned their first lessons on The Wonder Years. Swings are a tricky choice. Girls don't have a purpose on the swing set. They just get on, swing as high as they can and then get off. Sometimes they use them as a seductive trap for men while using their charm and sweetness to exude out of them as they slowly rock from side to side. Yet in general, guys only get on the swing set for three reasons.
1. To measure who is the better man by seeing who can swing higher,
2. Trying to make a full circle around the bar, or
3. Getting as high as possible and then jumping out as far as a human can.
The swings might be the only co-ed outdoor play set. If I had to choose a sex I would say they are geared toward boys for the mere fact that they have purpose when they are on the swings.
Slide: Slides come in a close second in the contest of the quintessential playground item. Guys don't use a slide to go down them. We see a slide as a mountain to be climbed. It is our Everest at eight years old. Girls use the slide for its true purpose. Girls wait in line just to slide down it. Guys use the slide because it is the fastest way down unless their is a fire pole. Girls win with the slide.
In fact, the only time a guy is going to stand in line waiting to spend just a few seconds going back down is if water is running down the slide and their is a drop off at the end into a large pool. Otherwise, we aren't hanging out to slide. We will let the girls do that.
Fire Pole: Fire poles are a young boy's only other option once we are on top of the playground structure. If this is an option for us we will take it every time. Why you ask? Because it gives us a glimpse into the fireman world. Will we enjoy this ride down the fire pole? Are we going to be able to slide down it at 3:00 a.m. when a fire is blazing, because in our young minds this is the only time we will be taken from the fire station?
In a boy's mind, we only see the good things about certain professions. Firemen get to slide down a pole and drive through red lights. Policemen carry guns and shoot bad guys. Astronauts walk on the moon and float in space. We don't realize you can die doing these jobs.
The fire pole is suited for males. It is where we test our sliding skills, because we all know girls only date guys with skills. Actually, I don't know if I have ever seen a girl slide down a fire pole.
Jungle Gym: Hanging upside down while the change we got from our lunch money falls out of our pockets doesn't sound fun to a boy. The jungle gym is a place girls flock to. I don't understand why, but it is. They can hang by their legs for minutes on end. The only reason a boy goes to the jungle gym is to either test each others swinging or hanging ability or to be around a new school crush. Trust me, boys would rather be doing something else than hanging around the jungle gym (did you get that subtle joke). Girls can have their jungle gym.
See-saw: Girls will sometimes sit on the see-saw and gently rock up and down with their friend, but it is for the boy that the see-saw is made. We grab a friend and do one of two things.
1. We push off the ground as hard as possible so our friend will hit with a massive thud and hurt his butt, or
2. Find a way to get higher than the side in the air and jump on it with our friend standing on the lower side so his 70 pound frame will be hurled into the sky.
A boy is in mind when the see-saw is built.
Open Field: Fields aren't really part of the playground, but they are situated near every single one. Girls stay near a playground because the guys are too busy playing either football, soccer or kickball out on the field. We rush out to the grass, pick two captains, choose teams and then play ball. For thirty minutes nothing slows us down and one will only leave the field for three reasons: water, injury or fight. If one of these should occur, the game does not stop. Run and get some water and come back as soon as possible. If your hurt, hobble to the nurse and get it looked at. If two kids have a fight, unless it comes to blows, we don't care. Settle it off the field so we can run the next play. If you count the open field as part of the playground then it is placed for the boys.

Ending On A High Note
Today ends my run as a substitute teacher. While some days were wonderful and filled with experiences I will never forget, others were very commonplace and not worthy of recollection. My record for sending the most students to the office in one day at T. A. Howard will probably never be broken by any sub in my lifetime. I will also cherish the memory of a junior high break up going down during seventh period science. Junior high love is so heart shattering.
My closing assignment is for Melissa, Joanna's sister. She teaches kindergarten at Charlotte Anderson Elementary and I was not looking forward to enduring the six-year-olds for eight hours. However, my outlook changed once I walked in the door and saw their smiling little faces. I began to perk up a bit.
They are in P.E. using up some of their energy right now and I am thoroughly enjoying my break. In just a few hours my run as a substitute teacher will end and I will be moving on to bigger, brighter things. Who knew quiting a part-time job could be so sad? Wait, what am I talking about? I am going to be a journalist. Forget subbing.

The Preperation Continues
My journey of organizing my move to Ennis continued today when I passed through the town today on my way back from Fairfield State Park. After lunch Joanna and I decided to travel the Bluebonnet Trails before returning home from camping. Sandy, my editor, asked me to drive around and take notes of where things are. This is exactly what I planned to do.
I drove downtown to the visitors bureau where we grabbed a map of the roads to take to see the bluebonnets. I only got lost one time, but quickly found my way back again. The blossoms were colorful and in full bloom. I even learned a couple of county roads like 1181 and 660 while observing the state flower.
I plan on finalizing where I am going to live either tomorrow or Monday. I will keep you posted.

Countdown To Ennis
I will be updating my personal movements over the next few days to show what it takes to get prepared in moving to a new city for a job. Today was the first day of preparation.
It began with a drive down to Ennis. I went to a few apartment complexes. I found two I liked and am setting up a meeting to look at another next week. Between the two apartments I saw, I have a choice between a more expensive but nicer/newer two bedroom and a less expensive but roomier one bedroom. However, if I like the one I haven't seen I will probably take it because of size, price and location.
I then ate at a place called Wall Restaurant. It was a Chinese place and I didn't really like the General Chicken. Of course, I haven't liked any General Chicken meal since Nacogdoches. No one makes it like Peking. Ask for C13. Say my name. She knows me.
I bought a map of Ennis at the local Wal-mart so I could get myself around the city. It was quite helpful in finding one of the apartment complexes. I am going to like Ennis I think.
I will be camping this weekend, so the Ennis trips will have to continue on Monday. I will be touring the city a little next week and picking a place to live so I can move in next weekend. My goal is to be settled and rested by Saturday. We'll see if that happens.

When Stepping Stones Step Back
Last night James and I decided to take our poker playing abilities to another level. We were going to drive to Shreveport, sit down at a Texas Hold'em table and play $10-20. This may not seem like a big deal to you, but let me assure you it is. It's the next step to becoming a poker great.
Both James and I were not nervous, more anxious than anything. We understood that we had to play at a higher limit game to become a better player. However, I didn't know it was going to be a $680 lesson. I had the worst run of cards I have ever seen in my life.
You are probably thinking, "Oh, he is just exaggerating. It was probably bad play on his part." No, it was bad luck. I played good hands and only won about five hands total. Two of those were split pots and none of them were during my second session. I was even beat when holding the fourth best hand. Only pocket sixes, aces or jacks beat me. Oh wait, what do you know. He's got the jacks.
I will be returning to the $10-20 tables because I will not let this deter me. The only thing that deters me is that I have to ask my mom for some money now.

Poker Entry No. 8
April 2, 2005
Players: 23
Entry Fee: $25
Rebuys: N/A
Place: 4th
Winnings: $0
This story and lesson could be the worst I have ever had to put myself through. It is the most amazing call on my part, and I don't mean amazing in a good way.
The tournament was at Steed's. The blinds went slow enough and the stack was large enough to play with. It was set up quite well and I will definitely be returning for another game if it is kept the same way. My mistake was against Brian Simmons early in the tournament.
I was second in chips and had a good table image. This image was helped by Josh Bishop and Brian Simmons who have played with me before. They know I am a solid player who plays good cards or has some reason to be in the pot. The hand in question was as follows:
I was in a middle position with A-K offsuit. I knew someone was going to raise behind me (it was that kind of table) so I decided to call and re-raise when it came around again. Two more behind me called and then Brian raised from the small blind. He raised $200, with blinds being $20-40. A raise that made me think I could beat him if I hit my hand. The two in between Brian and me folded and I re-raised another $800. I was going for a large re-raise to either win the hand right there or create a large enough pot to give me pot odds for draws. The two behind me folded and Brian called after thinking for a few seconds.
The flop came 5-4-5 rainbow. Brian came out betting $500. I raised without hesitation. I made it $2,000 to go. He had to think about it for a few seconds but eventually called. The turn was a 6. There were two suited cards, but I wasn't worried about that at all. Brian checked quickly and I checked.
That was my first mistake in this hand. Brian had about $2,600 left and I had about $2,850. I should have gone all in on the turn. I knew he wasn't too proud of his hand. If I had gone all in on the turn I am almost positive he would have folded.
The river came with a Queen. Brian thought for a few seconds and then bet $1,000. I thought for about fifteen seconds going over the hand in my head. I asked how much he had left and he said $1,600. Would he go all in with his single pair hand. He didn't have a five, six or Queen. I couldn't see him having a four, even with the possible A-4 suited. Honestly I put him on pocket 3's. I'm not sure why that hand popped out in my mind.
I told myself either fold or go all in. Then my mind left me. It literally exited my head, went to the kitchen and grabbed a sandwich. That is the only explanation I can come up with because I didn't fold or raise. I called! Why did I call? I only have a pair of fives with A-K-Q kicker. He has to have that beat.
Come to find out he did. He flipped over pocket 2's and said, "You probably have me." I sadly had to reply, "No... no I don't." What in the name of all that is good and pure was I thinking?
Lesson: When holding Ace high, don't call. It is the worst possible move you can make.

Stop The Presses!
It only took one year, 10 months and 18 days, but I finally have an interview with a newspaper. I have been requested to be screened by the Ennis Daily News. The position open is a government/police reporter.
I am really excited and a little nervous. My interview is at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. It should be a few hours but I will let you know as soon as possible how it went. I would like those who can remember to be praying for me tomorrow that I don't make a fool of myself or anything like that.

Pope Dies, I'm Lost
With the loss of Pope John Paul II an era has now passed. I myself have known no other man to be the pontiff in Vatican City. Many Catholics had started mourning since his ailing a few years ago. However, his health got very poor last week and a vast number feared the worst. The Holy Father sadly passed on Saturday after days of weak condition.
I am not Catholic, so I do not understand all of the sadness around this. I am not trying to sound hard-hearted, but I would like someone to explain to me what the fascination is with this man. Is he your Jesus Christ or what?
I know how they pick a pope, so I don't need that explained. Just give me an answer to this question. Who is the pope? Give a detailed description of who this man is to the Catholic people and what purpose he serves. Isn't he just the head of a church?
I would be sad if my pastor died, but I wouldn't go stand in the Bob Duncan Center and light candles and pray for hours straight. I would probably sit with my family and mourn the loss of my cousin. That is who our pastor is.
Again, I wish not to step on any toes. I like to think of myself as Fred Astaire if you know what I mean. I just want to get a handle on who this man is and why he was so revered. Was he like Gandhi or Buddha? Or is he just a leader of the church who did many good things for his one billion followers? Please, discuss.

P. Diddy Idea Man Behind Number One Movie
Ashton Kutcher, star of last weekend's number one movie Guess Who with Bernie Mac, was quoted as saying about the movie, "The idea really came from when I was spending time with Sean Combs and people couldn't figure out why the two of us were hanging out together."
Really, is that where an idea about an interracial dating couple came from? PUFF DADDY! Actually the idea came from a 1967 film called Guess Who's Coming to Dinner starring Sidney Poitier, Kathryn Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. It is rated one of the top 100 movies of all time by the American Film Institute.
Of course, anyone connected to Hollywood in some form would know that. Wouldn't they? Kutcher is in television and movies. He is dating a movie star. He has friends who work in the biz. Wouldn't he be likely to know where the true idea came from about his new movie?
If you would like to see the moronic statement it is located here:

I'm Going To Have A Reputation
I have been subbing at T. A. Howard Middle School for sometime now and cannot remember the last time I didn't send someone to the office. Today was no different.
During third block a student accidentally yanked a curtain rod down. Another student named Tyler proceeded to call him a faggot. Lawrence, the teen who pulled the curtain rod, was in the process of putting the curtain back in place when Tyler said it again.
First off, don't use that kind of language. It is rude and disrespectful. I can't stand students who aren't tolerant of others.
Secondly, why put the kid down for fixing the situation. I could possibly understand name calling for pulling it down, wrapping it around oneself and prancing around like the Riddler at Arkham Asylum, but not for doing the right thing.
Lastly, that isn't even a relevant put down. Why is he a faggot for ripping down a curtain rod? Is it because curtains are associated with home decor and he, being a male, must be gay for touching something affiliated with interior design? That is ridiculous.
I asked Tyler what he said. He told me the vulgarity that was spoken and I immediately responded by pulling out a referral and letting him know he was going to the office. He didn't protest either. He was rather willing.
Can I go a single day without sending someone to the principal of T. A. Howard. It got so bad one day that I was forced to send nine people to the office. NINE people. NINE. That's right, NINE.
Am I too strict or do I just get the bad classes? Are students just so bad these days that they don't know how to act in a classroom? My child will respect elders, teachers and classmates. If he/she doesn't it's a belt across the face, and when I say face I mean mouth. Just kidding about that last sentence. His/Her punishment will be an injection of enough sleepy cheese to make Sleeping Beauty look like she was taking a power nap.

A Funny Quote
I heard something funny/sad today on an episode from The Shield.
"If a man is shot in the ghetto and a detective never arrives, did a crime ever really occur?"

My Fifth Rant
To put this simply, I have a deep-rooted abhorring for those who don't respect the moment of silence. I have been a substitute since September and have yet to see a class that has every student quiet during the calmness. In my day I would do a quick prayer for the duration of the silence. I would sometimes throw in something about a girl in third period or a Spanish test coming up. You know, the important things God should have to deal with involving teenagers.I'm not asking every kid to pray to God. All I want is for the students to show some consideration of the ones who would like to pray or contemplate on their day. Is that so hard? Some students will chat about their day or what just happened in the previous class. I have heard a few conversations go something like, "Oh my God, and then Billy told me that Kathryn was cheating on him with Chris. So, do you think that means Billy trusts me and confides in me? If they break up do you think Billy will date me?" Not if he finds out you were spilling his life out during the quietest moment of the school day.I want every student to sit in silence for 20 seconds. Am I asking too much? They don't respect me enough to shut up for the other 90 minutes of class. Why would they think about listening to authority for 20 seconds? This leads me into my next rant. The pledge of allegiance. If you aren't doing it, then you don't deserve to be in an American school. I have seen some who just sit in their chairs and not lift a finger during the pledges. If you don't want to pledge allegiance to the Texas flag, okay. I'm not happy with it but I will get over that. However, you are an American citizen partaking in many liberties that are not offered anywhere else. The least you can do is lift your right hand, place it over your heart and utter a few lines of monologue.Teenagers make me sick these days. They don't respect anything and they are worthless until about the age of 17. Then they at least can take my order at McDonald's. Of course, some can't even handle that menial task.If you are a student reading this, please start recognizing the moment of silence as a time to reflect on your day and treat it with the honor and respect it deserves.

Is That A Knock I Hear?
For the past few days I have been doing some work for a guy named Greg. He is the owner of Uplink Communications. He asked me at Beach Reach if I would be interested in doing some work with him during a conference this week. I eagerly, but cooly, said yes.The conference was Congreso. Sounds Mexican doesn't it? Well, it is. It is a conference for Latin American (politically correct version of Mexican) youth and college kids.I was put to the task of videoing random stuff of the kids arriving from their homes, sitting in their seminars and participating in Mission Arlington work at local apartments. I really enjoyed going to the apartment complexes and meeting with administrative personnel who were in charge of the work. I felt like an actual member of the press with my all access pass around my neck and video camera in hand.Friday night was set up as both a church service and a concert. The band who played was Salvador. They are big on the radio for the song How Far is Heaven. I'm not sure which it is. They were pretty good except only about three songs were played in English. The rest of the set was in Espanol. Mateo no habla Espanol, so I didn't understand much of the music. However, I could tell they were having a rocking time. The footage I shot over the past three days was shown today. It was okay stuff. Greg did a good job of editing it all together. My shots were a little long, but I think he was happy overall with the material. He didn't like one part of the video but it was all his footage so I didn't feel too bad about that.Hopefully this is an opportunity for me to get into a more than part-time job. I really enjoyed the stuff I did and I want to learn more about it. I just pray that Greg will use me in the future.

Tonight Is The Night
Tonight decides the final standings of the first ever Central Arlington Tournament Of Champions. We all know Chad is first, but who will be second? It could be me. I am holding the position by three points. James is currently in third with Danny trailing by only one point. Clint M. has the possibility of nabbing second place, but it is going to take a lot of specific events for that to occur. Brent, Hector and Clint H. are battling for the bottom three. Between the three of them they are one point from each other. Clint H. is a point behind.
After tonight we will have our pecking order of who is the best among our group at a no rebuy, long tournament style of play. Chad is the best, but who will come up right behind him? Hopefully me.

I'm Back
I had a good time in Panama City, Florida. Nothing huge happened. I enjoyed serving in the areas I did. I got to play with a rockin' video camera. I met some really cool people like Abby Moore and Aaron Hill. It's good to be home and if I can think of any individual humorous experience I will be sure to fill you in.

Good News And Bad News
The good news is I am only 100 hits away from using a comma in my site counter. Woo-hoo.The bad news is I am going to be away for a week. I don't know if I will be able to update from Panama City, Florida. I am leaving for Beach Reach today. If I can I will keep you posted.

My Beef With Pop Culture
Yesterday I was engaged in two different conversations about pop culture (t.v., movies and celebrities). The first discussion was with my cousin Mark. We talked about everything from what a cult classic is to what made Seinfeld so great. We had a good time with it and hit a lot of points. The examples of cult classic movies were Rocky Horror Picture Show, the epitome of cult, and Tremors.
The second conversation, encompassing shows like American Idol, The O.C. and the newly broadcast Blind Justice, was with Jaclyn and Brandy. This debate didn't go quite so well.
Something you need to understand about me is I hate pop culture. I can't stand it. People like the Simpson sisters, Paris Hilton, Ryan Seacrest and Ashton Kutcher drive me insane. They are incompetent, useless drones of society. If they dropped off the face of the earth it wouldn't bother me one bit.
Now back on topic. While talking about terrible shows on television they asked what makes pop culture so terrible. I didn't have a very good answer then, so here is a better answer. Jaclyn and Brandy, I hate pop culture because it is directed to the lowest common denominator of society.
These television shows aren't written for the better intelligence of mankind. I'm not saying Seinfeld or The Sopranos is advancing us further into a better future, but I am trying to explain that Newlyweds, The Simple Life, The Real World and most reality television is mind numbing. Do we really get anything out of these shows except something to talk about around the water cooler the next day?
"Did you see how stupid Paris was on her show last night? What's the name of it again?"I can't stand it. To answer your question Jaclyn, yes, I like music from Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra because it has survived the test of time. I also like it because it doesn't address killing a cop, banging a mom or anything of that sorts. Songs from today may last, but does it all fulfill the other requirement of my standards? U2 will. So will Norah Jones. Hmmmm, two good artists. Green Day...American idiots.
Well, to bring this thing to a close. I don't like pop culture because it appeals to the lowest common denominator. Pop culture has brought about such foolhardy items like the pet rock, disco and The New Kids on the Block. However, it has also produced the lava lamp, rock and roll and The Beatles. So I guess it can't be all bad.

I've Made The Switch
I decided to try a new poker site online. The one I was at was fine. No problems with it. I was at Party Poker. However, James brought to my attention the idea of putting some money into Poker Mountain.
The reason for this is because they are giving a 100% sign up bonus plus a free entry into a $25 tournament. I have to play several hands to win this bonus, but it is worth it. I still get to play poker and I can win a free $500.
I have only one real problem with the site so far. It is either a new site or not many people trust it because I can't find too many players at any one time. The most people on the sight so far have been 98 people. That isn't many. Especially when you are looking to enter a tournament with nine others.
I am up $60 from playing poker and $10 of my sign up bonus. I want to play against T.J. Cloutier or Daniel Negreanu, the sponsors of the site, but I have a feeling their tables are a bit out of my price range.

Worst. Subday. Ever.
The following is a warning. I have had a terrible day and am very pissed off at the students of Brooks Wester Middle School. What is typed on this page cannot be helped. If you are sensitive to vulgar, crude or naughty words and descriptions, please do not read the following entry. Thank you and have a nice day.
I was given three classes and an advisory today. My first class started off grand. Not even ten minutes into class I already had a problem. I noticed a few students passing around a small dry erase board. I could see something drawn on it and naturally it aroused my curiosity. What I saw was a travesty, at least for seventh graders. It was a drawing of a naked woman laying down with her legs spread open. I must admit, past my initial shock I was quite alarmed at how good the drawing was. However that was not the point.
I immediately asked who drew it and a kid named Jonathon fessed up to it. I told him I had to send him to the office. After pleading with me to not write him up he broke down into tears. I made up a half-ass referral and walked him down to the office (another teacher had heard the commotion and come to see what was going on, so she stayed in the class for me). As we went to the office he continued to sob and wail about how his dad was going to kill him. He was genuinely afraid. I would have felt sorry for the kid, but then I realized that would involve applying an emotion to the situation, which is something I lack in this world.
After filling out the paperwork and explaining to the secretary what was going on, I proceeded to go back to class. As I was walking down A-hall I saw the principal of the school escorting three students to her office. The kids were the others who were passing around the picture. Had someone called her down there? She asked me if I was their sub and I answered with hesitation and shame on my face.
I entered class and relieved the other teacher. The rest of class went rather smooth actually. We played a review game for their test tomorrow and they had a lot of fun with it. After about thirty minutes, two of the students from the incident reappeared with passes saying they were excused. The other two had their stuff picked up. Not a good sign. Class went along without a hitch. I actually enjoyed myself.
Advisory went along splendidly. I had no problems with them. They asked me a lot of questions, but other than that they were fine.
Second period might have been worse than the first. This was the class of shitheels. They couldn't stop talking. We played the same review game as first period, but they didn't want to review. Every time two new students went up to answer the question the entire class, sans three or four perfect teenagers, would start yelling, screaming and fighting with each other. I yelled at them so many times to shut up, but they just wouldn't stop.
Two students had such a problem with each other that I had to take them to another class to sit with a teacher who could control them. This class had absolutely no respect for me. I have never seen such a horrid, despicable bunch of assholes in my life.
My last class was not good, but not off-the-charts bad. They talked a lot, so much so that I had to yell several times to be quiet, but past the talking they were okay. I had a lot of students in my last class who were saying they didn't get a review because they were absent last class. I told each one of them I didn't have any extras. They asked what to do, so I said pay attention during the game and write some of these answers down. Did they do this? No, of course not. Instead they jumped around and made fun of the kids who got the answers wrong, yet didn't get any of their answers right either.
After we finished the game, I decided to extend the game because one team was winning by such a large amount. I changed the rules around a bit to give the other team a slim shot of making a comeback. The winning team flipped out on me and started yelling at me. It pissed me off so much I said, "Fine, you don't want to play anymore. Then you can sit there in your desks and study by yourselves."
Once it quieted down a student asked me if I was going to give the answers on the review. I was completely taken aback. The review game was the answers. I was reading questions from the test and these morons weren't bright enough to figure out that fact.
I have taken a vow to myself that I will never sub for Brooks Wester Middle School ever again. It may have been that the class was a coach's class or that these kids are spawns of Satan. Who knows. However, I will not be looking into it any further. I wipe my hands of Brooks Wester.

2005 Academy Award Winners
I did better than last year by one. I guessed 16 correct winners. I should have gone with Millon Dollar Baby for best picture, but Scorcese's lack of winning four previous times blinded my judgement. The better film won which makes me happy.
I missed some of my complete guesses like Short Film - Live Action and Documentary Short Subject, however I got their counterparts right. I also missed both music categories, which is bollocks. Any song that gets more radio play should be the clear winner. Passion of the Christ had a much more haunting and memorable score than any of the other nominees.
Passion of the Christ was the political scapegoat this year. It should have won in two categories, but missed taking an award for all of its options. The score was one of those obtainable categories and the other was makeup. The job makeup artists did to Jesus in that film was amazing. I am upset at the academy for not recognizing Passion of the Christ as the clear winner in either of those two categories. I will admit that the movie isn't a best picture, but it has a powerful story that is going to be extremely effective for the Christian Coalition in the future.
I was quite pleased with Chris Rock as host. He didn't cross any lines. He made fun of every type of celebrity, whether it be black, white, fat or thin. My two favorite jokes he made was about Michael Moore wanting to do the movie Supersize Me and the one about the check-cashing place. I hope to see Rock back as host in the future. Of the hosts I've seen, Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, and Chris Rock are some of the best. However, I've only been watching for the past few years. Whoopi and Letterman sucked as hosts.

I Agree With You Greggo
Greg "The Hammer" Williams believes strongly in the following creedo: celebrities don't go to jail. I completely agree with that statement. Rappers are about the only ones who truly get busted and even a high percentage of those make it free of charge.
The following link, http://movies.yahoo.com/news/ap/20050224/110931426000.html, is a story about the actor Tom Sizemore. He has done such films as Saving Private Ryan and Heat. The man is on probation and failed seven drug tests this month alone, and we are even in a short month. Yet, the judge refuses to put the man in jail until his hearing.
If this guy was Joe Blow Drug Addict off the street he would be thrown in a cell without a doubt in the world the right thing was being done. However, because Sizemore is a celebrity he gets five-star treatment.
Is this what's wrong with America? Is a problem we face that we put too much emphasis on stars and athletes than we do on the common man? Or do these celebrities deserve special justice? I think not, but there is nothing we can do. As long as People magazine is being bought and Entertainment Tonight is rated so high we will always have this problem.

Casino Royale Is Really Going To Come To Theaters
This news will probably bore most of you, but I enjoy this subject and it makes me happy. Martin Campbell, the director of the upcoming James Bond movie Casino Royale, has confirmed a basic plot with not too much visual effects and explosions like previous films.
Campbell said, "There are things that will have to be changed from the original novel. The Cold War elements will have to be reconfigured, for example, but Casino Royale will be a grittier, tougher and more realistic Bond movie. We'll be getting away from the huge visual effects kind of films."
He went on to add, "In the new film, Bond is essentially starting out in his career, and has just recently become part of the double-0 section. The idea is to put a bit of the dash back in Bond. By the end of the movie, the character will have been forged into the wiser, harder Bond we know."
This means a couple of things. First, M will have to be reverted back into a man. The timeline is going to be smudged a bit, so we will have to go back to Bond's boss being male. I'm not against female authority, it just makes more sense.
Second, if we have a Q, which rumors have been saying their won't be a place for him and I believe it now after hearing the plot from Campbell, it would be confusing for audience members to see John Cleese as the gadget-giving character. I predict there will either be no Q or it will be played by someone else, even though I really liked John Cleese in the role.
Thirdly, there has to be a lot of smoking and drinking from Bond. His character in Ian Fleming's novels was cold, hard and had many vices, women included in those. Campbell has said, "I'm looking forward to humanizing Bond a bit. In the novel, Bond smokes 70 cigarettes a day - unbelievable. And he gets a little drunk."
I think Campbell will enjoy making this film and his enjoyment will show on the screen. I am completely confident in his ability as a director because of his work with the Bond series before. He has directed works like Beyond Borders and The Mask of Zorro. He has the range to do both drama and humor. I am getting more and more excited everyday for this movie. It could make or break the future of the Bond series in Sony's hands.

Had A Blast In The Shreve
This president's holiday weekend I spent time reflecting on my country's leaders by celebrating in the land of the Louisiana Purchase. When Thomas Jefferson purchased the territory for $15 million he doubled the land of the United States. He also inadvertently created a gambling haven for Texans.
The trip was going to be Joanna, Clint, Kristyn, Chad, Randy, Danny, Brandy, James and me. However, a few couldn't make it and the number dropped. When Saturday rolled around, it was Kristyn, Clint, Chad and me in the car with Joanna already in Shreveport because of a death in the family. We drove to Nacogdoches, where we ate at Peking and played frisbee golf while Kristyn drove around Nac remembering the good times.
We arrived in Shreveport at about 5:00 in the afternoon and were anticipating a long wait on the $4-8 Texas Hold'em table. We called when we left Arlington, seven hours earlier, and put our names on the list, but we called after leaving Nac and they told us call-ins are only on the list for three hours. We arrived with three names ahead of ours. They hadn't taken our previous names off the list. We waited for a table for about 20 minutes.
Saturday night, we quit playing poker about 11:00. We ate at the diner in the hotel lobby and then went upstairs and ordered a movie. The movie was Flight of the Phoenix. Don't ever watch it. It stinks. Chad and I made fun of it the rest of the weekend, mainly because we were the only two who stayed awake for the entire thing. It was predictable and boring.
Sunday brought a new poker day. I went downstairs at 9:15 a.m. and sat right down for poker. Played about 7 1/2 hours with a lunch break in the middle of that. The girls did their spa thing. Joanna got beaten up during her massage. The lady internally bruised Joanna from her rubbing.
We all went to a seafood place for dinner that Clint and Kristyn found on a walk of Shreveport. They proceeded to tell us about it and then asked us not to come up to the room for 20 minutes. A little pregnant sex for the two of them. They got 22 minutes and barely finished. Some 66 second man he is.
The seafood joint wasn't great. It wasn't even good. They charged for refills after the first refill. They charged more for a loaded baked potato and you couldn't substitute your fries for a potato. And the food wasn't that great.
One great thing about staying in the hotel is you can put your name on the list for poker and then go up to your room to wait. They will call when they have a seat for you. We put our names down, went and ate dinner, came back to the room and watched Desperate Housewives before we were called again.
We woke up Monday morning and decided not to play in the poker tournament. We dined at the buffet for lunch and then drove home. We had lots of laughs and everyone enjoyed the trip. We even got a cheaper room rate because we played poker. It was great.

Oscar Update
The presentation is only ten days away. I am getting more excited as each day passes. I have seen a few of the films nominated and think The Aviator will win a couple of its 11 nominations, but how many is hard to say. Million Dollar Baby will beat out Martin Scorcese in Best Director though.
There have been rumors about Chris Rock offending some members of the academy with his jokes and remarks lately. Gil Cates, producer of the show, said no one has complained and Rock will do a great job.
Cates said, "Anyone who has ever seen Chris Rock's work knows that he is a very funny man. They also know that he is not afraid of making observations that may offend someone somewhere. And that is exactly why we chose him to host the 77th Annual Academy Awards."

Funniest Thing I've Heard All Week
Tuesday night during our poker game Hector said the quote of the week. He raised a hand, which wasn't anything new for Hector, and Clint M. said, "I call." Hector immediately turned to Clint and with utter shock in his voice said, "You do." Then he turned back around to Chad and mumbled, "Ah, Clint give Hector no respect."
This is probably one of those "you had to be there" moments, but for the ones who were there it was funny. I salute you Hector and this blog is for you.
A close second for funniest statement was by Danny last night. I asked if he would miss hockey and he said, "Actually, I liked it more when they were playing because I heard about it less." It's close, but Hector has it.

TOC Night 7
Not a lot of interesting play occured last night. Hector was a crazy, ballsy man. He went all in with 6-7 offsuit, and it wasn't for a small amount. Brent arrived late again because of work, but the time spent away didn't help much. With my poor finish, I now lose first place since the second week. The scores are as follows:
Clint M. - 1 point
Chad - 2 points

Heaven, I'm In Heaven
While many have heard me complain about the terrible conditions we live in, mainly how poor pop culture is, last night took me to a time when life was simple and movies weren't yet classics.
For Valentine's Day I took Joanna to dinner and a show. I had two choices. One was a meal and Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing and the other was dessert and a showing of the 1954 Audrey Hepburn film Sabrina. I opted for Sabrina. I usually have to be in the right mood for Shakespeare whereas I'm always ready for Hepburn or Humphrey Bogart.
We had a quick, but satisfying, steak at Tony Roma's and then were off to the theater. When we entered downtown Grapevine I could feel a change taking place. I had a hunch this night would be different than most. The city was transforming as we traveled north on Main Street. It was morphing from a modern metroplex, made up of criss-crossing interstates and bustling commerce, to an old-fashioned Mayberry. The buildings were erected to resemble the nostalgic 50s.
Then I saw what I was looking for. With a neon red marquee suspended from the entrance, the Palace Arts Center was looking glamorous and glitzy. Joanna and I entered the theater and waited in line to grab some drinks and dessert. A wine bar was open and I was tempted to order a glass. Generally I detest wine, but since seeing Sideways a few weeks ago I have been tempted to taste something that is not a merlot. We settled for a coke and bottled water.
We were then ushered to the dessert line. While waiting for the dressy men and women in front of us to dip their assorted fruits in the fountain of chocolate, a friendly man in his mid-40s approached us and described the two cheesecakes available. Joanna selected the turtle cheesecake, a caramel-covered chocolate dessert, and I settled for the other. Why should we both get the same one? I was brought a New York cheesecake with raspberry glaze and three raspberries on the side. It went great with my chocolate-covered strawberries.
When the doors were opened, giving us the signal to be seated for the evening feature, I whisked Joanna upstairs. I wanted to experience the viewing from the balcony. An elderly gentleman, with microphone in hand, strolled down the aisle to the main stage. He told us some history behind the movie, the players and the house.
Immediately after the lights went down and the black-and-white cinema came up, I felt a sensation of excitement and child-like joy rise up in me. I was watching a beautiful woman in a classy film from the balcony. All that was missing was the news reels shown about the war before the picture.
Nothing could have gone wrong for those two hours. Afterwards, I couldn't stop from smiling as I drove home. Hepburn was irresistible, as usual. Bogie was hard, but likeable. William Holden was still desirable, despite his character's flaws. And I was hypnotized by it all. I was in a state of admiration and grace.

Polanski Seeks Justice
One of the great directors of the 70s was Roman Polanski. He filmed suspenseful, captivating movies like Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby and the recent Academy Award winner for best director The Pianist. Polanski has been living in France since 1978 due to fleeing child-sex charges in the United States. He pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, a 13-year-old girl, but fled Los Angeles soon after thinking the judge would not uphold the deal he made with the prosecution. He cannot be extradited under French law.
Why do I tell you all of this? Let me explain. Polanski is asking for restitution in a libel case with Vanity Fair. Polanski is seeking to sue Vanity Fair publisher Conde Nast over an article stating Polanski made advances on a woman in a New York restaurant while on his way to his wife's funeral. His pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, died in 1969. She was murdered by Charles Manson's followers in Los Angeles.
The British House of Lords has ruled in a 3-2 decision the director should not be denied access to justice because of his unwillingness to come to Britain for fear of being arrested and extradited to America. He has been allowed to video link himself to the court and give evidence and his testimony.
"Despite his fugitive status, a fugitive from justice is entitled to invoke the assistance of the court and its procedures in protection of his civil rights," said Lord Nicholls, who voted with the majority.
I have a few problems with this entire thing, so let me hit each point one by one. First of all, Polanski is a sick bastard. He's a great director, but he should be in jail. He had sex with a 13-year-old. Does he have no moral fiber in his body?
Secondly, any normal, morally-straight person would consider this a punishable act. Since France doesn't consider sex with a minor a crime, this makes me say, "Nazis, you can have them back." It disgusts me to think France will allow such scum in its borders.
Thirdly, would any court allow Joe Blow, a no-name sex offender, the courtesy of sending his testimony in a libel suit via satellite? No they wouldn't. This just upholds my theory that celebrities don't go to jail.
Finally, I feel fugitives of justice shouldn't be allowed their civil rights. At least not certain rights. Polanski has not accepted the consequences for his actions, so why should another person be punished by him if he will not be allowed to be punished? I'm not saying two wrongs make a right, but what I am saying is Polanski doesn't deserve justice. Nast should be held responsible for his actions, but Polanski better not get anything from it. Not a dime. Not even an apology. Not until he has come to grips with what he has done.

Professional Poker Tour
I was reading one of Daniel Negreanu's entries on his blog and discovered a new poker show will be broadcast. It is the Professional Poker Tour (PPT). It will go along with the World Poker Tour, however, the difference will be anyone can enter a World Poker Tour event whereas only a person who has established themselves in the poker community will be invited to join the PPT. The following is some of the requirements to be invited by the Professional Poker Tour committee:
To be eligible, players must have proven themselves by: winning or making a final table at a WPT event or a WPT Championship, scoring as a top 10 point leader in WPT Player-of-the-Year rankings, winning or placing highly in the $10K buy-in event at the World Series of Poker, securing a spot on either CardPlayer Magazine's Card Player of the Year Top 10 list or Poker Europa's Top 10, or being a member of the Poker Hall of Fame.
This is very cool. Viewers will now get to see only the top players play against each other. The random, lucky player won't be at a final table. Aspiring card players will now be able to see how the best play certain hands. I am extremely interested in this and can't wait to see when it is aired.

Addison Already Causing Conflict
The baby was born at 8 pounds, 11 ounces and was 20 inches long. I got the 20 inches right. It was delivered at 5:36 p.m. and family began going back by 6:04 p.m. However, others were seeing this kid at 5:45 p.m.
What kind of a world do we live in where a woman who has no blood relation to the child is allowed to view the baby and stay in the room the entire evening before the grandfather, aunt or second cousin? Okay, I'll admit the second cousin is stretching it, but we're a really close family. The first people to see Addison Courtney Mangrem, outside of Mommy and Daddy, were the grandmothers. Alright, that's legit. Then we move down the list to... let's see who's next. Aunt, yeah, and woman of no relation who is a friend of the parents and rubbed the mother's feet during the pregnancy. What? How did she make the cut?
Shouldn't Pop go back next? What about Tia? She was the first one at the hospital that morning. Okay, fine. We'll let one of the aunts, not Kristyn though, and a no name have the room for a few minutes. A couple minutes pass and Kristyn, my mom and I are still complaining about how we got bumped. A few more minutes pass. Finally we tell Larry, a.k.a. Pop, to go back there. He's wearing a button that says grandparent for goodness sake. He then comes and gets my mom, who is Tia.
After that things starting descending at a normal rate. However, one person is still in the room, the foot rubber. When they only allow a certain number of people in the room at a time, shouldn't certain people have the common decency to leave after they have been in there long enough?
It didn't bother me that I was last on the family list to see this new kid, but I should be before non-family members. I at least deserve that, don't I? It's the principle of the thing.

TOC Night Six
It finally was broken. The curse of the frog has not inflicted someone with a worse than half finish. James was the closest to breaking the curse, but Chad has finally shown the curse had no hold of him. After winning last week, everyone expected a poor finish because of the frog. However, he finished in third last night. He is unhappy with his three points, but it is probably because I was supposed to finish in fifth. Here is how it broke down last night.
Matt - 1 point
Brent - 2 points
Chad - 3 points
Clint H. - 4 points
Clint M. - 5 points
James - 6 points
Hector - 7 points (no show)
I pulled out a miracle runner-runner to double up and get back in the game. This is probably where Chad's frustration stems from.
Overall scores are:
Matt - 17 points
Chad - 19 points
Danny - 22 points (used his bye)
James - 25 points
Brent - 25 points (used his bye)

TOC Week Update
With the race still pretty tight for all positions, we will be having an interesting night. Hector, thanks to my lovely girlfriend for pointing out Friday night, is tied for last and must take a personal day and will not be playing. He used his bye last week, due to the weather, and must take a last place finish.
Brent is also taking quite a risk. He has a catering job tonight and must come late. His blinds will be forfeited, however he will still be able to play when he gets there. He may lose half his stack, but it will be enough to work with. He may also move up a spot from players who are knocked out before he ever arrives.
Clint M. rose above the mire last week and beat the slump he was in. His third place finish helped him slow down his increasing score and gave him the confidence he needed to end his last weeks in winning spots to catch up to the leaders.
Danny is taking his bye this week. This will help his score due to him being only one point lower than the four way tie for last place. This gives Chad, James and myself a chance to pass Danny or stay ahead and keep the pressure on.
With two players gone, the curse of the frog on Chad and so much at stake, tonight could very well catapult someone ahead of the pack and decide the rest of the Tournament of Champions.

A New Addition
Tomorrow, Mark and Julie will have a baby girl. Her name will be Addison. Pretty normal for our family. So far, we have named two boys Major and Cade. Addison seems like Mary to those two names. Having a baby in the family is always exciting, but it will be odd having a girl. The only girl we had growing up was my cousin Kristyn, but it was her against three guys.
When the family would get together, the kids would tag team wrestle (me and Bart against Mark and Kristyn) on our grandparents extra-king size bed. Actually, it was probably a queen, but to us it was huge. We would look at the same bed 15 years later and wonder how all four of us fit on the thing. Kristyn did add a woman's touch to the group however. One time while driving on a trip from Weathorford, Bart took his shoes off and his feet stunk. Kristyn decided to fix the problem by putting her perfume on his toes. It intensified the unbearable odor by a hundred times. We all rolled down the windows and started gagging.
I don't see little Addison wrestling with Major and Cade. Major would probably push her off the bed if she looks at him wrong and Cade will chunk a ball into her eye if she gets too close. I feel bad for the girl. She is going to have it rough if another girl doesn't come along soon. Either Kristyn and Clint need to have a girl or I need to get on the stick with this baby thing. Yet, I don't see the latter happening for quite some time.

Big News
I have to share this with you. I know most of you don't care about the subject matter, but oh well. I'm excited.
EON productions, the company who makes James Bond movies, has officially announced today the next Bond film, called Bond 21 until now, will be titled Casino Royale and be directed by Martin Campbell. Campbell directed the 1995 Bond film Goldeneye. It is considered by many fans the best of the Pierce Brosnan era. I would agree with this.
The news is wonderful for many reasons. 1. Campbell did a great job with the last Bond picture he did. 2. The title is the only one of Ian Fleming's that hasn't been used. 3. If the rumors of going back to the roots of Bond and doing a small scale film, instead of an action piece, are true then Casino Royale is the perfect book to follow.
The only down side of this news is the producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, didn't confirm who the new James Bond would be or if John Cleese would appear as Q. Speculation is saying Q will not be featured in the new film. That would be a huge mistake on the producers and writers part.
This news has made me so happy, which is good because I was having a downer of a day. This is so great.

The Good Old Days of Today
In 30 years, when some of us have passed on from either cancer, old age or drug use, the remainders will pine for the good old days. What makes the past so wonderful? Is it the nostalgia of our youth, the good memories we hold onto, while disregarding the horrible and derogating ones, or is it just simply things were less complicated and more enjoyable before the latest of this came along or the crime rate of that went up?
What fascinations and fixations of today will we miss later in life? It's not going to be Starbucks. Starbucks will become the Taco Bell of Demolition Man. Do you remember that movie? Taco Bell becomes the only restaurant in the entire city. Starbucks will not be missed by anyone.
Will it be bicycles and touch-tone phones we long for again? Instead we will have jet-propelled hover bikes and voice activated phones. Will we miss the rudimentary things in life like petite coffee shops and the newspaper? When I think about iconic pop culture of the 1950s I think of Mom and Pop diners and paperboys yelling the headlines from street corners. Where are those bits of history today?
When we are old and gray and wish for the days of old, what will come to mind for us? We criticize so many things, yet, in a short time it will be missed because it will have been replaced by something fancier, faster and less sentimental.
